Facebook For The Rest Of Us

Today I discovered a horrible, horrible thing. Consumating.com. Wow, yeah, wrong site to put into my hands. As close as I can tell, the premise is: dating site + tags + clever gimmicks to get participation out of you = Dating 2.0. Yes, I want to conquer it, this is pretty much what I always used the internet for, but now it is so streamlined.

Of course, this means you all need to join and give me love. Don’t worry, I’ll give love right back at ya.

Weird, I thought you would have been all over this in March. I even had a profile up on whatever day it was I linked to it in del.icio.us. Of course, the real Dating 2.0 sites are those that aren't explicitly about dating. I'm thinking of Flickr actually, which, among other things, is a Web 2.0 online dating site.

dating sites currently suck far worse than search did before Google. They all use the same simple-minded model. They seem to have approached the problem by thinking about how to do database matches instead of how dating works in the real world. An undergrad could build something better as a class project. And yet there's a lot of money at stake. Online dating is a valuable business now, and it might be worth a hundred times as much if it worked.

I'm not really much of a dating site person, that's generally what I've always used LiveJournal for, but this one was just too clever to pass up.
